About Us
Welcome to Nagpur University Library. This Library was
started alongwith the establishment of the University in 1923 in order to
cater to the academic and research needs of the faculty and students.
Since then, the Library has gone from strength to strength to live-up to
the expectations of its immediate clientele
.
The University started functioning in 1923.The library
of this university which was also established in 1923. The University main
library is on North Ambazari Road, Nagpur-10. There is a Campus Library at
the New Campus on Amravati Road. In addition several university departments,
Laxminarayan Institute of Technology, Law College of Education have their
own libraries.
Main Library
The University Library did not have its own building until 1957 and was
housed in most inadequate premises. It was in 1953, as a special feature
of the first Five Year Plan, that the University authorities put up a
scheme to the University Grant Commission for the development of the
Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Dr V B alias Bhausaheb
Kolte Library, including the construction of new building estimated to
cost Rs. 12,50,000/-. The foundation stone of the building was laid on the
29th March 1954. The building was designed to have two floors with a total
floor area of 57,480 sq. ft. and to provide a stacking capacity in 4 tiers
to hold 3,50,000 volumes approximately, and accommodate 250 readers in the
general. The work commenced and it took almost three years to complete the
construction of the building and the University Library shifted to its new
premises in July 1957.
Campus Library
The Campus Library, a branch of the University Library. The building was
constructed from U.G.C. fund and inaugurated on 5th December 1978.Prior
to this there was a reading room with a sizeable collection attached to the
post-graduate teaching departments known as PGTD. On its establishment,the
collection of the PGTD has been transferred to the Campus Library. Books
for the Campus Library are procured through University Main Library. The
Campus Library is building up its collection in tune with the requirements
of Post-graduate students, the researchers and the faculty members.
In 1978, the Campus Library, one of the branch Library of Dr V B alias
Bhausaheb Kolte Library was opened at Campus area on Amravati Road.
A large number of volumes and the Manuscript section of University
Library was transferred to this Campus Library. Besides this there
are various Departmental libraries and the University Main Library
acquires books for both the Campus and Departmental Libraries

Membership
The membership of the Library is open to members of the University
Authorities; Officers; Heads and teachers of the departments;
Non-teaching employees of the University; Students and research
scholars of the University departments; Postgraduate students of
the affiliated colleges; Retired employees of the University; and
others engaged in serious reading and research. The Institutional

IC : Identity Card
For information about annual subscription and for other
details members can contact the Registration Section at the main library.
The duration of membership shall be for one academic year
and shall have to be renewed every year. Any change in address during the
validity period of membership should be communicated in writing to the
Librarian.The Registration of membership is 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. ( on all
working days till the end of December each year).
Borrowing Privileges
All categories of members excepting the Reading Room
Users, and Short Term Users are entitled to borrow books as per the
prevailing rules of the library. Borrower hold responsibility for
the book(s) issued to them. Users have to pay for the lost or damaged
books; and over-due charge for the late return of the book(s); duplicate
Identity cards; etc. at a rate determined by the Library Committee
Books prescribed for the university examination (text books); Theses
and dissertations; Reference books; Books marked as ‘Rare’ or Reserved;
riodical bound vols.; Maps; A-V material are not issued for use outside
the library.
Library Rules
- Reading Room
- Any person desiring to make use of reading room facility may
be admitted at the discretion of the Librarian.
- The reading room card shall be produced for scrutiny at the
time when so requested by the Library staff.
- Each member belonging to the category G & H shall have to
produce on identity card on demand for verification.
- Books and journals requisitioned by the members shall be issued
on presentation of a requisition slip duly filled in and handed
over to the person- incharged, who shall thereafter procure the
same for the member.
- A person found mutilating the pages of a book or a periodical
or otherwise damaging them shall have to make good the loss and
he/ she shall be debarred from the use of the library in future.
- Late Fee
- A member who fails to return the book/ books issued beyond a
date on which it is returnable, shall be required to pay a late
fee of Rupee 1 /- per day per book. Subject to a maximum of two
time the original cost of the books.
- Damage of Loss of Books
- Every member taking a book out of the library and every Reader
within the library shall be responsible for its safe custody and
shall return it to the library.
- In the event of book being lost or damage, he/ she shall either
replace it or pay not less than 3 time cost of the books he/ she
shall be required to pay such compensation as Librarian may think
proper.
- iii) Reader shall not write on the book, damage, tear off pages
or make any mark either with pencil or in ink, on any book, manuscript,
or map, belonging to the library. He/ she shall not erase any mark or
stamp of the library on any book, manuscript or map belonging to the
Library. Any reader observing such things done by any person shall bring
it to the notice of the Librarian immediately.
- No tracing and no copy of any map or manuscript shall be done
without express permission of the Librarian.
- In case of a book belonging to a set or serious is lost of damage
by a member/ reader and a new volume is not separately available,
the whole set or series shall have to be replaced by the borrower/
reader.
- Before leaving the counter the borrower should immediately point
out any mutilations in the book to Library Assistant on duty or
otherwise the borrower shall be held responsible for replacement
of the book or payment of such compensation as may be fixed by
the Librarian.
- It shall be the duty of the Library Assistant on duly at the
counter to examine each book returned by a member and to check
if it is mutilated or damaged and if any, bring it to the notice
of the Librarian immediately.
- Penal Rules
Unauthorised removal of books, mutilation, theft, damage; misbehaviour
with library staff, abuse of the facilities warrant penal action against
such members by the Library Committee. Pending decision of the Library
Committee, the Librarian may take one or more of the following actions
:
a) Cancellation of membership;
b) Forfeiting library deposit;
c) Recovery of the cost of damage; etc.
Library staff have the right to ask users for evidence of membership.
The Librarian may at any time recall any book before expiry of the
period of loan and regulate the issue of any book.
- General Rules
- A person entering the library shall record his/ her name, membership
number & address in the register maintained for the purpose
at the entrance counter.
- While entering the library, all personal belongings such as
umbrellas, sticks, books, parcels, hate, handbags, purses, attaché
cases, flat and file covers, etc. shall be deposited with the
Attendant at the entrance counter and a numbered taken obtained
in lieu thereof. This facility for depositing personal belonging
at the check counter can be enjoyed only for the period the depositor
is in the library.
- All reasonable care for the safe, custody of the articles will
be taken. The administration shall not accept any responsibility
for any damage or loss for the same.
- If a token issued to a reader/ member for depositing his/ her
belonging at the gate counter is lost, he/ she will have to pay
Rs. 10/- towards its replacement cost.
- The staff member of the Library at the entrance is authorized
to examine every thing that passes into or out of the Library.
- Taking chewing pan, spitting, eating food, sleeping, smoking
or any behaviour to disturb other readers or the discipline of
the library is strictly prohibited.
- Dogs and other pets shall not be taken in by member or visitors.
Vehicles should be kept at the vehicles stand only.
- The Librarian shall have the power to suspend the use of the
ticket and card of any member or to refuse admission to any one,
infringing any rules of the library and/ or to suspend or cancel
the use of the Borrower’s ticket and Reading Room card of
any member.
Note : The member are requested to note that all
Library Rules could not mentioned here, because, we have already
display on our notice board. If any member required the information
of our Library Rule, they may be contact to Incharge, Lending Section
of Main Library, Ramdaspeth, Nagpur.

Library Automation
The University Library started automation in 1995-96. the housekeeping
activities computerized are : (a) Acquisition of Books & other documents;
(b) Cataloguing; (c) Journals Management including Bound Volumes; (d)
Circulation of Documents; (e) Data Conversion. The computerized services
are as under : (a) OPAC; (On line Public Access Catalogue); (b) Current
Awareness Services; (c) Online Databases; (d) Internet/ E-mail.
E-Resources
The V-SAT is existing in the Physics Department. Hence, all V-SAT services
under the control of coordinator V-SAT. Those research scholars are
interested to know that how many e-resources ( journals ) are freely
access through V-SAT, they may obtain the information under website
: http:// www.inflibnet.ac.in
Inflibnet/ IUC Facilities
Since incept, the University has been very actively participating in
the various programmes/ services of INFLIBNET initiated from time to
time. These are as under :
- Contributing our computerized books database and Current Serials
Data to the Union Catalogue build by INFLIBNET Centre every year since
1996.
- Contributing data to Experts Database built by INFLIBNET Centre
- Active participation in the various training programmes conducted
at INFLIBNET Centre and also at our University.
- Hosted CALIBER, annual convention of INFLIBNET Centre, at our University
1999
- Encouraging our library users to access INFLIBNET website and their
various Online databases.
- Since past 2 years, the University has been very actively involved
in the UGC_Info Net programme.

Services Of The Library
- OPAC, Online Databases, Like LISA, Biological Abstracts, Offline
CDROM Databases, Xerox, Fax, e-mail, INFLIBNET, Braille Reader Services
to the visually impaired, computerized accession register of manuscript
database using multilingual facility.

On-Line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC)
Alongwith the traditional card catalogue a computerized On
Line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of the Main & Campus Library
is operational. Work on converting the catalogue of the collections
of departmental libraries is in progress.
The OPAC allows search by author, title, subject and title keywords,
as well as through several other access points.
E-Mail and Fax
E-mail facility is available both at the Main and Campus Library
Panasonic-Plain Paper Fax has been installed at the Main Library for
providing the facility to users.
Inter Library Loan Facilities
- Books and other publications which are not available in the Library
may be procured by the Librarian on loan from other libraries or Institutions
for the benefit of the members of the library. The packing and postal
charges for getting such publications on loan and return them to the
respective libraries shall be borne by the member concerned. When
the book is returned by post it shall be returned under registered
cover at the risk of the borrower and he/ she shall be responsible
for any damage to the book cause during transit.
Provided, that in case of Research Scholars and Teachers working
in the Department of the University, the postal charges incurred
in getting and returning the book/ books on Inter Library Loan facility,
be borne by the University Library, if the Guide or the head of
the department concerned as the case may be, certifies the same.
- All such book/ books received on inter- library- loan basis shall
be read in the Reading Room and shall not be issued for use outside
the library.
Reservation of Books
A book which is lent out to a member may be reserved for borrowing
by another member or filling of a self addressed stamped reservation
card at the counter. The card shall be dispatch to said member when
the book is received. Such a book shall be kept reserve for him for
a period of 3 days only and shall be issued strictly according to priority
a demand to the members.
A-V Unit
Two TV sets and VCRs alongwith 189 educational video cassettes
on diverse subjects selected from UGC’s Country-wide Class Room
and IGNOU’s programs were acquired by the library. Users may contact
the Incharge, Campus Library Lending & Reference Section for use.
Manuscripts Collection
The manuscript section of the University was set up on the 14th April
1945 and later on it was attached to the University Library. The manuscript
Library is very rich in its collection and rarity. At present the total
number of manuscripts stands at 14313.
Career Literature
Realising the need for marketing our products, the University Library
is paying special attention in building-up career literature and guides
for various competitive examinations. Digests and competitive periodicals
are also being added display at university main library for the benefit
of users.
Monthly Book Display
Since 5 September, 1995 (i.e. the Teachers’ Day) The University
Library has started the ‘Monthly Book Display’ of new additions
to the University Library and Departmental Libraries from 3rd to 11th
of every month at the Campus Library
