About us

The Department of Library and Information Science, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur is one of the oldest department of Library Science in the country. This department was started on 20 August 1956 and had a history of fifty years. Starting in the year 1956 with a diploma course in Library and Information Science it has come a long way upgrading the diploma to BLISc, starting MLISC of one year course (1984) and MLISc ( Integrated two years course ) as per UGC guide lines in the year 2003. The department also has to its credit Ph. D. program from 1987 onwards. Department has celebrated its Golden Jubilee year during 2006-07 to commemorate the 50 glorious years of its existence and its academic contribution to the discipline of Library and Information Science. The department was headed by stalwarts in the field who are renowned scholars and brought laurels to this department by their academic and administrative acumen to this university and upgraded standard of this department as one of the leading LIS educational institutes in the country. Department is Located on the first floor of RTMNU, Main library building, Ramdaspeth, Nagpur. The department regularly updates its curriculum to keep pace with the emerging job-market and development. The department has started Credit Based semester pattern for MLISc ( Two Years Integrated Course) from the academic session 2012-13.

Dr. MANGALA HIRWADE (1968) Head of Post Graduate Teaching Department of Library and Information Science, RTMNU, Nagpur has a throughout first class career with professional experience of more than 22 years.
Presented  Papers at  USA (2009), South Africa (2011) and Sri Lanka (2010 and 2011), Chaired the Session on IPR and Copyright, 7th International Conference at, Sri Lanka, Delivered more than 200 Lectures as Resource Person in Refresher, Orientation Courses sponsored by UGC, AICTE and CBSE and at other Institutes. Promoting IPR and Open access in India.  

Recognized Research supervisor at RTM Nagpur University and SGB Amravati University. Under her guidance six students have been awarded Ph D, four have submitted the thesis and 8 students are doing research, she has guided 34 M Phil dissertations and 52 MLISc dissertations / project works. Published more that 130 Research papers, Authored five books and edited 11 books/ conference proceedings,

Presently she is working as Assistant Professor (Sr. Grade). She was heading the DLISc, Rastrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur for last five years (from 1st July 2009 to 30th June 2014).   She has been in LIS Profession Since 2002, Gold Medallist from Nagpur University. She worked as a Lecturer in DLISc, Shivaji Univeristy, Kolhapur from 2002-2003. She has experience of teaching and guiding for UGC NET/SET, P.O. and other competitive examinations. In total, 35 project reports have been completed under her guidance for MLISc-II year. She has published several papers in seminars, conferences and journals at national and international level and has more than 150 papers to her credit. She is author of four books in LISc. She has edited 16 national and international conference proceedings, Journals and books. She has been invited to deliver a talk in various universities at seminars, conferences, workshops, short term courses and UGC-Refresher and Orientation courses.

She has completed Information Literacy Project with UNESCO and SALIS as a member. She has completed UGC-Minor Research Project. Now currently working on ICSSR Major Research Project.  She is a production Committee Member of Mahiti Yug from 2005-2008. Columnist in “Mahiti Yug” Quarterly Journal from 2005-2009. She has Organized One National Conference, 5 national workshops and co-ordinated 4 UGC Refresher Courses in LISc.  She is a recognized research guide for Ph.D. in Library and Information Science in the faculty of Social-Sciences of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur and Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati. Under her guidance 3 students have submitted thesis for Ph.D. She is an Editorial member of Interdisciplinary research journal of LIS , KLA Bulletin, Journal of Advancement in Library Science,Annual Report of RTM Nagpur University , Journal of Arts, Humanities and Social-Sciences of RTM Nagpur University, Information Age. She is an expert member in Definitional Glossary of LISc, project of Ministry of Scientific and Technical Terminology, Government of India. She has been invited for various academic committees as a member at different universities.  She is a life member of professional associations’ viz. DLA, ILA, IATLIS, LISAA, SALIS and VLA.

Presently working as Assistant Professor (Sr. Grade) at Department of Library and Information Science, RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur has 16 years professional experience and has a throughout first class career. Worked as Librarian at Nashik Road College (July 1998-March 1999) and worked as Librarian at RTMNU’s Br. S K Wankhede College of Education (April 1999-Feb 2009).

Published 11 books and more than 50 papers at National and International level and edited 3 books Completed one Minor Research Project sponsored by University Grant Commission on “Electronic Resources on Internet for Developing E-libraries on Education.” (2009).

Recognized Research Supervisor at RTMNU and seven students have been awarded Ph. D, 18 M.Phil and 30 students have been guided successfully in project work at MLISc level.
Invited as a resource person in orientation courses and refresher courses at various universities. Editor of “Indian Journal of Interdisciplinary Research” and “Dnyanjagat”.
Recipient of Dr. T. V. Gedam felicitation “Gold Medal” for Ph.D. in Social Science faculty in the subject of LISc (2004) by RTMNU,  Nagpur.
