About us

The Department of Library and Information Science, R.T.M. Nagpur University, Nagpur is one of the oldest departments of library science in the country.  This department was started on 20 August 1956.  Nagpur remained the capital of Central Province & Berar till 1956.  That time, there was no university in the state offering a postgraduate diploma course in Library

Science.  Feeling the necessity, some of the senior librarians in the City had started approaching the University to start a Departments of Library Science.  Till then, the various University colleges and Departments were established with the munificent donations made by the various philanthropists. As the discipline Library Science is quite new and its social implications were not much realized by general public, it could not get a benefactor as in the case of the LIT, Department of Geology and the others.  Finally the University had approved the proposal on the assurance that the department will be ‘self sufficient’.   This is the reason why as many as 79 students were admitted in the 1st year. The classes were held both in the morning as well as in the evening. Initially, the department also had the problem of teaching staff. Very few qualified people were available in Nagpur who could surve the department.

This  department  had a history of fifty years. Starting in the year 1956 with a diploma course in Library and Information

Science it has come a long way upgrading the diploma to BLISc, starting MLISC  of one year courses 9 1984) and MLISc ( Integrated two years course ) as per UGC guide lines in the year 2003. The department proposes to start M.Phil Program( one year regular course ) from the academic session 2007-08. the department also has to its credit P.hd program from 1987 onwards.

Department celebrated its Golden Jubilee year during 2006-07 to commemorate the 50 glorious years of existence and its  academic contribution to the Discipline of Library and Information Science. The department was headed by stalwarts in the field like Prof. Phadke,P.S. .  Prof. Gidwani,N.N. . Dr V.V.Kulkarni. Prof. Muley, Y.M. , and Dr.P.S.G. Kumar ( for twenty four Years ) who are renowned scholars in the field and brought laurels to this department by their academic and administrative acumen to this university and upgraded standard of this department as one of the leading LIS educational institutes in the country.

Library Science Department is Located on the first floor of RTMNU Main library building,  Ramdas pet.
